La jubilacion minima congela purchasing power despite monthly indexation

The accumulated inflation and the amount paid on the reference date expose a persistent loss in the purchasing power of Argentina's minimum pension. In October 2026, the guaranteed minimum benefit reached 435,749 pesos. With the frozen bonus of 70,000 pesos, the total received by a retiree at the floor amounted to 505,749 pesos.

The minimum benefit fell substantially behind inflation

Applying the accumulated inflation since 2020 to the 435,749-peso minimum would place the amount between 580,000 and 700,000 pesos, depending on the calculation method. The resulting gap ranges from 34% to 61%. The maximum benefit for October 2026 was 2,932,175 pesos, while the corresponding inflation-adjusted estimate would be between 4.3 million and 5.1 million pesos, implying a shortfall of between 45% and 75%.

The 70,000-peso bonus has been frozen since March 2024, when it represented 52% of the minimum benefit. It currently accounts for only 16% of that amount, the same proportion recorded when it was created in September 2022. Preserving its March 2024 purchasing power would require the bonus to be close to 160,000 pesos. The total of 505,749 pesos is therefore approximately 15% below the lowest figure obtained by adjusting only the minimum benefit for inflation.

  • The bonus does not form part of the benefit and does not update under the mobility formula.
  • The bonus is not included in the annual payment traditionally associated with the end-of-year bonus.
  • The 70,000-peso amount has remained frozen since March 2024.
  • The maximum benefit is 6.7 times the minimum today, compared with more than 21 times in 1995.

A narrower scale alters other benefits

The compression of the pension scale also affects benefits outside the contributory retirement system. The Universal Pension for Senior Adults represents 80% of the minimum, while non-contributory disability pensions equal 70%. This configuration means that changes at both ends of the scale have broader consequences for the lowest income levels covered by social security.

Since March 2024, the mobility system updates benefits monthly according to the Consumer Price Index. This change followed a formula based on wages and revenue collection that proved insufficient to preserve purchasing power amid annual inflation of 94.8% in 2022 and 211.4% in 2023.

For retirees close to the minimum, an individual recalculation may not produce a concrete improvement. If the resulting amount is below the guaranteed minimum, the floor absorbs the difference and the final benefit does not change. This makes the purchasing-power gap particularly difficult to close for the largest group of beneficiaries, even though the upper end of the system faces an even larger relative shortfall.

The producer will evaluate this week whether the inflation adjustment can materially improve the incomes of retirees near the floor, given that the guaranteed minimum and the frozen bonus limit the effective impact of a recalculation on the lowest benefits.
